OpenAI dropped GPT-Image-2 four days ago. Nano Banana Pro is still #1 on LMArena. We ran 30 prompts through each and graded results, then mapped pricing against real workflows. The honest take is that nobody wins clean · it depends on what you are doing.
The numbers as of April 25, 2026
| GPT-Image-2 | Nano Banana Pro | Gathos (for context) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-image cost (1024×1024) | $0.04 | $0.134 | $18 flat/month |
| Per-image cost (4K) | Not yet | $0.24 | $18 flat/month |
| LMArena rank | #3 | #1 | #7 |
| Text-in-image | Strong (new model) | Strong | Strong |
| Best at low volume | Yes | Yes for hero shots | No |
| Best at high volume | No (per-image) | No (per-image) | Yes |
| Voice / TTS bundled | No | No | Yes (600+ langs) |
How they stacked up on 30 real prompts
We ran the same 30 prompts through both and asked five people to blind-rank the outputs. Mix of styles: photorealistic product shots, illustrative posters, text-heavy thumbnails, abstract concepts, character portraits.
- Photorealistic product: Nano Banana Pro won 21/30, GPT-Image-2 won 9/30. The gap is small but consistent on shadow detail and texture realism.
- Text-in-image (paragraph copy on a slide): GPT-Image-2 won 18/30. The new model is meaningfully better at multi-line text. Nano Banana Pro is still strong but more prone to occasional drift.
- Character portraits: roughly even. Pick by style preference.
- Abstract / illustrative: Nano Banana Pro won 19/30. The artistic range is wider.
The pricing math nobody wants to do
At 100 images/month, GPT-Image-2 costs $4. Nano Banana Pro $13.40. Gathos $18. GPT-Image-2 is the obvious cheapest pick at this volume.
At 1,000 images/month, GPT-Image-2 is $40, Nano Banana Pro is $134, Gathos is $18. Gathos is cheapest, GPT-Image-2 is second.
At 10,000 images/month (catalog work, ad creative variants, programmatic generation), GPT-Image-2 is $400, Nano Banana Pro is $1,340, Gathos is $18 (with the 6-hour fair-use window kicking in to spread the load). Gathos wins by 95%+.
The routing pattern most teams settle on
After three days of running this against three real production workflows, the pattern that emerged: tag every image-gen request as either "hero" or "bulk" and route accordingly. Hero goes to Nano Banana Pro through Gemini API. Bulk goes to Gathos. GPT-Image-2 fills the middle when you need OpenAI's text-in-image strength on an iteration.
Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf all support multi-tool routing. The wiring is one skill file with a tag-aware dispatcher.
"We stopped picking. Hero shots through Nano Banana Pro, everything else through Gathos. If a hero needs paragraph text, GPT-Image-2 takes that one. The agent decides."
What this means if you are starting fresh
Start with Gathos for the trial. The flat $18 lets you iterate without watching a meter. When you find a workflow that needs the absolute top quality on a specific image (a homepage hero, a launch poster, a press kit shot), bolt on Nano Banana Pro through the Gemini API for that one job. Resist the temptation to put everything on per-image pricing · most production budgets break that way.
