Image generation

Gathos vs Midjourney: picking the right image API.

Midjourney is the artistic-quality benchmark. Gathos is what you reach for when you need a proper API, readable text inside images, and flat pricing. Here is what each one is best at.

TL;DR
  • Pick Midjourney if: you want best-in-class artistic output, you work from a UI (Discord or midjourney.com), and you generate under ~500 images/month.
  • Pick Gathos if: you need an API (real API, not a wrapper around Discord), need readable text inside images (logos, posters, thumbnails, packaging), generate over 200 images/month, or want flat pricing.
  • Midjourney does not have a first-class API as of April 2026. The wrapper APIs (UseAPI, Goapi) are unofficial and fragile.

Why a Shopify store owner moved catalog generation from Midjourney to Gathos

"I run a small candles-and-home-goods Shopify store. Midjourney gave me gorgeous artistic shots but I could not automate it · every image was a manual Discord session. When I wanted 10 shots of the same SKU on different backgrounds, I was clicking the same buttons 40 times. I moved to Gathos because the API meant I could loop over my product catalog and generate 300 shots overnight. I miss MJ for artistic one-offs. For catalog work, Gathos is obviously the right tool."

Frequently asked questions

Does Midjourney have a real API yet?+
Not as of April 2026. The v7 roadmap mentions an official API but no date has been published. The community APIs (UseAPI.net, Goapi.ai) are polite wrappers around the Discord bot and can break when Midjourney ships an update.
Which one renders text inside images better?+
Gathos by a wide margin. Midjourney (through v6) struggles to render anything longer than 2 or 3 characters reliably. Gathos is a model family specifically tuned for text-in-image. If your workflow includes posters, thumbnails, product packaging, or logo placement, Gathos wins cleanly.
What about artistic style and visual polish?+
Midjourney is still the quality ceiling for moody, cinematic, painterly work. If you are generating concept art, editorial hero images, or fine-art prints, Midjourney is the right tool. Gathos is strong and photorealistic but the "Midjourney look" is distinctive and not what Gathos optimizes for.
How does speed compare?+
Gathos is roughly 10 to 15 times faster per image. ~4 seconds vs 30 to 60 seconds for Midjourney. At scale this matters: 1,000 images is an hour on Gathos vs 10+ hours on Midjourney.
Can I use Midjourney images commercially?+
Yes, on paid tiers. Same for Gathos (all tiers). Neither product makes commercial rights complicated.
Which one should I pick?+
Artistic, UI-driven, under 500 images/month: Midjourney. API-driven, text-heavy, over 500 images/month, or you also need voiceover: Gathos.
